A 40-YEAR ANALYSIS OF MARKETING, CASE ACQUISITION 
AND CONTINUOUS LAW FIRM GROWTH

(A RETROSPECTIVE LOOK AT WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN’T IN BUILDING YOUR PRACTICE)

This three-hour program presents the “nuts and bolts” of building strategic alliances with other firms, maintaining “top of mind” presence with referral lawyers and cultivating case generation with proven methodology and unique new strategies.

From the beginning, we address case selectivity as the traditional method of building and growing your firm qualitatively.  The opportunity to establish a network of “ambassadors” for your firm, including former and existing clients, geographically diverse co-counsel, and other non-traditional business sources is presented from multiple new perspectives.

Building and expanding your case inventory must include personal contact with lawyer referrals.  This can be conducted at conventions, such as the Boardwalk Seminar, national and other state trial lawyer meetings, and work with the American Bar Association. Participating organizations such as ABOTA and your local bar association, as well as the county and geographical regions adjoining your office location should be a valuable source of new cases. There are several international law groups, such as PEOPIL where you can attend conventions and meetings to network with European lawyers whose clients are injured during business or vacation travel to your geographical area.

The opportunity to meet with new case sources is only limited by your imagination, time and interest. Please remember the non-lawyer organizations you may already be active in, i.e., Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Club, athletic associations, religious and civic groups. If you are interested in public life and politics, you will meet hundreds of people a year who can be the source of case generation.

What follows is the transition from the handshake business model to sophisticated and cost-efficient Internet and direct mail programs, as well as branding through long-term placement in legal journals and periodicals. 

“Branding” is the name of the game and Thomas Scolaro has experienced that technique by trial and error and the creative use of graphic design and firm identification, using graphic design, digital analysis and a creative collaboration with a multi-disciplinary work team. The results are palpable. Budgetary considerations are directly addressed, allowing any firm to ramp up the dynamics of client and co-counsel relationships, while keeping a very personal and individual approach to the practice of law.
