“The fool tells me his reasons; the wise man persuades me with my own.” – Aristotle

Knowing your audience—the jury—and selecting them astutely eases the path toward persuasion.  Since jury selection is the only opportunity lawyers have to learn about prospective jurors, it is imperative to be strategic and intentional, yet curious and responsive.

Join nationally recognized trial consultant and current President of the American Society of Trial Consultants Patricia Kuehn for a 3 hour journey through important issues and strategies that affect jury selection.  With a little thought and preparation lawyers can ask the right questions, listen discerningly to the answers and know how to (de)select wisely.

Here are a few questions lawyers ask about jury selection which will be explored.
What do we really need to know about the jurors?
What kinds of questions should be submitted to the court?
How limiting or informative is a juror’s demographic background?
How can we know more about the jurors than what they say?
To what should we pay attention during voir dire?
What factors should we consider when selecting the jury?
How can bias be identified in order to pursue a cause challenge?
How to choose a jury with limited information?

Patricia (Patty) Kuehn is a national litigation consultant specializing in the science of human decision‐making and persuasion. Since 1993 she has observed, studied and interacted with over 10,000 jury eligible citizens about litigation issues. She regularly conducts mock decision‐making research, collaborates with attorneys on witness preparation, assists and advises clients on courtroom persuasion and strategic jury selection. In 2009, the federal court qualified her as an expert in small group decision-making.

Ms. Kuehn holds a Master’s degree in Social Psychology and a J.D. Using her extensive experience and knowledge of jury (and other factfinders’) decision‐making tendencies she collaborates with attorneys to construct compelling and prevailing litigation strategy, courtroom narratives, and strategic jury selection plans. Her trial consulting practice is based in the Chicago metropolitan area.
