Keynote Speaker:

Hon. Alberto Rivas, A.J.S.C.

Judge Alberto Rivas is the Assignment Judge in Middlesex County and has served in that position since July 2017. He was appointed to that position by New Jersey Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner.

Prior to becoming the Assignment Judge, he was the Presiding Judge of the Criminal Division from February 2015 to June 2017. 

Judge Rivas has served in the Family Division and began his judicial career in the Civil Division in 2010.

He was appointed to the bench by Gov. Jon Corzine and was sworn in as a judge in January 2010. 

Judge Rivas had a distinguished and varied career prior to being named to the bench. He spent nine years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Newark, where he rose to be Deputy Chief of the office’s Criminal Division.

He also worked as the law director of the City of Perth Amboy and was a partner in the law firm of Lite, DePalma Greenberg & Rivas in Newark where he handled civil and criminal matters.

Judge Rivas also served as a member of the New Jersey State Sentencing Commission and as a court appointed Independent Monitor reviewing the New Jersey State Police’s compliance with a 1999 consent decree involving racial profiling.

He has been active in the community and has served on the Board of Trustees of Middlesex County College.

Judge Rivas received his Bachelor’s Degree from Princeton University and his Juris Doctor from the Rutgers University School of Law in Newark.
