Improv for Lawyers

Published by New Jersey Association for Justice

Attorneys develop the ability to enhance their trial skills, negotiate more productive settlements, improve their mediation skills and attract new clients. Often, thinking fast and reacting in the moment is the difference between success and failure as a lawyer.

Improv for Lawyers develops skills in dealing with the unexpected, trusting intuition, active listening, agreement and other critical legal skills that are supported by the fundamentals of improvisation.

The key 'essential skills' for attorneys that are enhanced by a practice of improvisation include:

• People skills
• Working to a deadline/ planning ahead
• Asking the right questions
• Understanding your client — and the other side
• Lawyers need to be good public speakers! (Basic communication skills)
• Thinking out legal solutions and arguments
• Teamwork (“Make your partner look as good as possible”).
• Problem Solving Abilities
• Persuasive storytelling skills
• General Investigation/Research Skills
• Be Proactive/ Taking the initiative
• Collaboration skills
• Emotional intelligence
• Reconstructing and Understanding the Conflict
• Creating Options for Agreement
